What is Autoimmune Protocol?

The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is an elimination diet designed to help those with autoimmune disease or other chronic health issues pinpoint their food allergies and sensitivities, and find their optimal diet for long-term healing. You start by avoiding all of the foods that have been shown to exacerbate leaky gut (which has been linked to all autoimmune diseases)—grains, beans, legumes, dairy, eggs, food chemicals, nightshade family plants, and also foods that have a high chance of being allergenic, like nuts and seeds. After 30-90 days (or sometimes more!) and once you start feeling some benefits, you can reintroduce foods, slowly and systematically to see which ones were the culprits. 

I found myself incredibly sick after being diagnosed with both Hashimoto’s and Celiac disease. Even though I thought I ate a great diet (I had been Vegan for 10 years), the nutrient deficiencies from my previous way of eating combined with autoimmunity caused me to have an intense health crisis, during which I found myself bedridden and unable to work. Starting to eat animal products again, as well as removing food triggers through use of the Autoimmune Protocol over a few years helped me fully regain my health, so it has certainly changed my life! 

Who is it for?

The Autoimmune Protocol is for those who are proactive and motivated to take on a serious commitment to heal their bodies. It isn’t something you can do 50 or even 75%—you need to be able to have 100% compliance in order to give your immune system a break from these food triggers. If you are great at planning and can incorporate meal planning, prep, and batch cooking into your routine, you will learn a lot from doing the Autoimmune Protocol. 

Who is it not for?

The Autoimmune Protocol is not for anyone who wants a quick fix, doesn’t have time in their lives to take on a change, and isn’t interested in looking for the subtle changes that indicate what is and isn’t working for you. It also isn’t for those who have a history of eating disorders, because of how restricted the elimination diet is. If this is you, make sure you get professional help to guide you through the elimination phase that doesn’t feed in to your tendencies.
